Little Women (2020)

The infamous tale of the March sisters has been a tale known and treasured by many. A story of how different personalities appear from the same home and survive in a world where the only thing expected of a woman was to be cultured, get married and raise a family.
And in 2020, another version of this tale was brought again to the silver screen with the aid of Emma Watson, Eliza Scanlan, Florence Pugh, and Scoirse Ronan to emulate the characters of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.

Unlike the previous versions of the same, this film does not follow the chronological tale as per the novel, it skips backward and forward between the novels of Little Women and Good Wives, something that would ultimately cause some confusion to the audience who may be confused when Meg begins to doubt her wifely skills and Laurie begins courting Amy after Jo turns him away.

I myself found the entire movie to be rather dreary as they really harp on the injustices faces by the female race in the 19th century, instead of how these ladies made the best out of horrible situations. There is a novelty that comes with wanting to be a homemaker that seems lost on this film entirely and a great deal of the film is only focusing on Jo and her desire to one day be an author under her own name.

Little Women was meant to show the beauty that can arise from domestic lives and how the women in society really do shape the world. But sadly this I feel is lost to the director trying in vain to inject scenes of female empowerment that feel rather forced for a story set in the 1900s.
